World Food Day
October 16, 2015
Thursday, October 16 is World Food Day.
The day was established by the FAO in 1981 to celebrate its first meeting in Quebec City, Canada, on October 16, 1945. This year’s theme is family farming; where agricultural work is carried out exclusively by the family and constitutes its entire income. We’re talking about an enormous area of world agriculture: according to the FAO, there are approximately 570 million farms in the world, of which at least 500 are family run. They are small producers, often barely visible, but which provide much of the world’s agricultural production and play a crucial role in economic and social development of the vast rural areas. To all of them this year, FAO dedicates the recognition they deserve, and proposes a series of measures to support them.
